  1. Select the Right Sized Truck – Whether you’re renting your own truck or hiring movers, ensure that you receive the best size truck for your move. Saving a bit on a smaller rental will cost you more in time as you go back and forth with multiple loads.  Reputable moving companies should also provide you with large trucks at no extra cost.  Avoid companies that have smaller (less than 25-ft) trucks and can’t load in one shot – as the multiple trips will certainly add time and costs.
  1. Save Those Toilet Paper Rolls – No need to get a fancy box or a new bin to organize all the cords from your electronics. Place toilet paper rolls vertically in a box and then place each wound cord into a roll.  This keeps all the cords separate and avoids you having to deal with a tangled mess.  Take it one step further and label the cord type on the outside of the toilet paper roll.
  2. Just Roll With It – Pack efficiently so that you limit the number of boxes and bins you need to rent or buy. Use suitcases to move clothing, or wardrobe boxes provided by your moving company.  Rolling clothing, not folding it, is the best way to ensure you are using up every square inch of the boxes or suitcases that you have. Another great tip, if you are doing a DIY move, is to leave your clothes on hangers in your closet and put them inside garbage bags for easy moving and unpacking.
  1. Start Early – just like any task, when you rush through it you are more likely to make mistakes and to buy things you don’t really need. If you start the moving process early, you will have time to sell items you no longer need and use that money to fuel your move. Items that you don’t sell can be donated – another great way to reduce the amount you actually have to move, thereby reducing the number of boxes and belongings to be moved.

With proper preparation, moving can be a lot less stressful than it needs to be. Five Star Movers has the expertise to help you avoid common moving mistakes and help you easily transition to your new home.
