Q&A: Wardrobe Boxes

As part of our Q&A series, Five Star Movers provides the answers to some most frequently asked questions. If you have a moving-related question, please email us at or call 647-348-0886.

Question of the Week
Question: What are Wardrobe Boxes, and why do I need them?

Answer: We get this question a lot! Wardrobe boxes are boxes about 4-ft high with a bar through the middle. They are used to hang clothing that would otherwise be on hangers in your closets. At Five Star Movers, we provide complimentary wardrobe boxes for all our moves (except those moving into longer-term storage). When our crew arrives at your home, the wardrobe box is the first thing they give to you. While they are moving your belongings, you can fill the boxes with your items already on hangers. At the new home, these boxes are the first thing off the truck, so that items can be easily transported to the new closets seamlessly! No ironing required!

Tips for Winter Moving

Posted & filed under Commercial Services, Five Star Moves, Moving Tips, Residential Services.

Moving in the winter can be tricky – especially if your move falls over the holidays.  Bad and unpredictable weather can make it even more difficult to plan for your big move.  In some cases, though, moving during the winter months can’t be avoided – so we recommend the following tips to keep your move quick and efficient, and to make sure you stay warm!

Hire movers

If there was ever a time to hire professional movers, this would be it. Have the experts pack and load your belongings and transport everything to your new home. Driving in the winter is dangerous enough as it is, so just imagine driving an unfamiliar moving truck in snow and ice! Best to leave it to the professionals.

Shovel and salt the driveway

If you happen to be moving in the snow, make sure to shovel pathways and your driveway if necessary to make your movers’ lives easier. Don’t forget to use an icemelter or salt–you wouldn’t want anyone to slip while carrying that box full of your dinnerware!

Set up the utilities in the new house

Make sure the utilities in your new house are all set up. Last thing you want to do is move into a new house to find that you’re without electricity, heat and/or hot water.

Protect the floors

Walking outdoors in the winter and then coming inside the house can make a mess of your floors, especially carpet. At Five Star Movers, we provide complimentary floor runners to make sure your floors don’t get scratched or dirty.

Don’t forget to warm up!

Invite friends and family over to help you celebrate and unpack – and don’t forget to provide the hot chocolate!

Locking Up

Posted & filed under Commercial Services, Five Star Moves, Moving Tips, Residential Services.

What’s one tip that people usually forget to organize on or prior to moving day? Changing the locks!

In most cases, someone has lived in your home before you. Of course, those residents would have had their own keys, but perhaps they also shared them with friends, relatives, or even contractors and home repair people. To keep peace of mind when you’re in your new home, consider changing the locks as soon as you get possession. A locksmith can usually get the job done in less than an hour, for a minimal charge that is worth your family’s safety and security in the long run.
